Morocco drop more 2010 points

Morocco’s chances of making the 2010 World Cup in South Africa took another knock as they failed to beat Togo on home soil in Group A. The Atlas Lions have just two points from three games following their 0-0 draw in Rabat. The home team badly needed a morale boosting win and should have benefitted from the absence of Togo’s talismanic striker Emmanuel Adebayor. Instead they squandered yet more points in the race to the finals.Morocco had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 10th minute when Togo’s Abdul Mamah handled in the area. But the subsequent penalty was blasted over the bar by Mounir El Hamdoui - a costly miss. It would have been a justified lead because the home team were much more confident in the opening periods of play.
But as the failure to score continued they created fewer chances and the game petered out.
It leaves Morocco with a huge task, whilst Togo will feel they are at least still in the mix.
The Group A picture is confused by the postponement of the match between leaders Gabon and Cameroon - they will play on September 5th.
